LASER TISSUE FUSION DEVICE Client: University of Colorado; Design Problem: Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) Surgeons currently use traditional sutures inside the nasal cavity to secure septal tissue post surgery. Along with being time consuming this technique can lead to complications in the recovery of the patient. It is the goal of MIND Studios to develop a medical device which is both faster and simpler than the current method while also reducing the risk of post surgery complications. Solution: MIND Studios developed a medical device which utilized laser energy to fuse the nasal tissue together, eliminating the need for sutures. Using laser energy, the device heats the septal tissue to am optimum temperature of around 70 degrees Celsius. At this temperature the proteins within the tissue begin to denature. Upon cooling these proteins adhere to one another, allowing for the ''welding'' of one layer of tissue to another. This process eliminates the introduction of foreign substances into the nasal passage while also reducing operating time.
